RIDE THE BRIDGE - BIKE THE BAY

The First Annual Bike the Bay is in the history books.  Bike The Bay '09  is in the planning stages.  Save the date August 30th, '09 !  More details here when they are available.  Registration should be available some time in January, '09.  Register early as this event is sure to sell out.


With over 2,000 participants including riders, volunteers, vendors and other supporting cast members, Bike The Bay was a memorable experience for so many.


For this we have many to thank - we appreciate all of the volunteers, vendors, support teams, and everyone else who participated to make Bike the Bay a  success. Special thanks to the cities of San Diego, Coronado, Imperial Beach,Chula Vista and National City. In addition we would like to thank CALTRANS, SANDAG, San Diego County and The Unified Port of San Diego for all of their support in making this event happen.


Finally, thank you to all of you who rode. Your support will help the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition with their advocacy efforts and ensure that this is the first of many Bike the Bay Rides. Thank you! Please check back in the coming weeks for a date for Bike The Bay 2009.

(This is how things went down in '08)

7:00 a.m. Wave Starts - Embarcadero Marina Park South, San Diego, CA (Staging at 6:30)

This non-competitive, community bike ride for riders of all abilities will take riders on a scenic and primarily flat ride around the San Diego Bay via the Bayshore Bikeway. Along the way, riders will travel through the surrounding cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City before finishing back at the start/finish line at Embarcadero Marina Park in downtown San Diego. Not only will the route travel through all five of these very diverse communities but it will also allow riders their first opportunity in over 20 years to ride over the beautiful San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge along the scenic 25-mile route. All riders will return to San Diego for a post-ride festival with food, beverage and entertainment back at the Embarcadero Marine Pake South.

Registration fee ( Individuals: SDCBC Members - $50, Non-Members - $55, Tandem Teams: SDCBC Members - $94, Non-Members - $99 ) includes ride entry, t-shirt and post-ride festival with food and beverage and a full resolution electronic photograph taken along the ride. Register early to ensure a place for your group.  Bike the Bay 2008 will be limited to the first 2,500 registered riders. On-Line Registration ends at 11:59 a.m. on 9/6/08.  Registration fee increases by $15 on 8/23/08. On 8/15/08 bib numbers and ride instructions will be mailed to pre-registered riders. There will be no refunds after 8/15/2008.  All riders who register after 8/15 will need to pick up their bib numbers at Pre-Ride Orientation on 9/6/08 or at the Start area on 9/7/08.

Proceeds from the Bike the Bay ride will benefit the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to making bicycling better in San Diego. The SDCBC provides educational programs, promotes awareness of bicyclists and bicycling issues in San Diego and acts as a voice for bicyclists to elected officials and decision makers throughout the San Diego region. Event Update

Note:  Early Registration has been extended through 8/22/2008.  Registration fees increase by $15 on 8/23.

September 6th - 5 to 7 PM

Pre-ride Orientation and Pasta Party at Omni Hotel San Diego, 675 L Street in Downtown San Diego. Packet pick-up for late registrants (after 8/15) and walk-up registration (if available).

September 7th

  • 5:30 AM - "Day of Ride" registration (if available) up to the limit of 2,500 registered riders.
  • 6:00 AM - "Weather Delay" decision made.  In case of rain, every attempt will be made to reschedule the ride for another day.
  • 6:30 AM - Staging of registered riders begins
  • 7:00 AM - Staggered wave start - Follow Bike Marshals leading riders across the Bridge
  • 8:30 AM - No riders allowed over the brige after this deadline
  • 8:30 AM - Post-ride Festival opens
  • 9:30 AM - Rest Stop #1 closes
  • 10:30 AM - Rest Stop #2 Closes
  • 11:00 AM - Rest Stop #3 closes and course officially closed to all registered riders
  • 12:30 PM Post-Ride Festival closes

Route Overview

The 25-mile non-timed, non-competitive ride starts and finishes at Embarcadero Marina Park South is located at the foot of Marina Park Way on the San Diego Bay. Take Harbor Drive north to Park Blvd and turn right. Follow Park Blvd around behind the Convention Center to Park entrance and start line. Click here for a map.  From Embarcadero Marina Park South, riders will cross over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge and travel the Bayshore Bikeway through the five cities surrounding the San Diego Bay before returning to the Park.

We encourage all riders to bring water bottles with them on the ride however, there are 3 optional Rest Stops offering water and refresments along the course.

#1 - Glorietta Bay Park/Coronado (approx. mile 5):
Located along Silver Strand Bike Path at Rendova Road. Please turn left at Rendova to enter Park.

#2 - Chula Vista Nature Center/Parking Lot (approx. mile 18)
Located at E Street at Bay Blvd.

#3 - Pepper Park/National City (approx.mile 21)
Located on Tidelands Avenue
